| Humboldt County, a jewel on the north coast of California, is a favorite with VISTA members, well-known and enjoyed for its rural beauty, magnificent redwoods, myriad outdoor activities, and its rivers, mountains, bay, and the grand Pacific Ocean. Now, this unique VISTA opportunity for service wants you. Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), an AmeriCorps program, needs your experience and skill for a full-time, full year commitment in Humboldt County. Being a VISTA member is about finding long-term, sustainable solutions to widespread problems, the cycle of poverty, and hopelessness by increasing the capability of low-income community members and families to improve the conditions of their lives. VISTA members will be engaged in activities to build capacity and sustainability within local non-profit or governmental agencies. For example, these VISTA members may recruit volunteers to work within the agencies; make informational presentations to community groups; develop program materials such as flyers, brochures, and policy and procedure manuals; research current projects and best practices; develop marketing strategies; or participate in resource development such as fundraising and grant writing. Each agency’s needs vary, and in the Current Projects section of the website www.rcaa.org/VISTA, you will find a descriptive narrative and a work plan which explain what the VISTA member will be doing in each position. Qualifications: RCAA’s AmeriCorps*VISTA Program is seeking individuals with excellent verbal, written, and computer skills who have some experience in different aspects of program development and are ready for a challenge. Volunteers of all ages, from college students to recent graduate who are eager to find an application for classroom skills; to those in the middle of their careers seeking a change; to veterans of the business and professional world looking to use the lessons of a lifetime to help build a stronger America. A VISTA member cannot be a student or otherwise employed during the service term. VISTA Benefits ~Monthly “living allowance” noted above; varies slightly by region. This subsistence allowance is commensurate with cost of living in low-income area of service. ~Education award of $4,725 at end of successful year of service; can be applied to past student loans or further schooling for up to seven years. ~OR, instead of education award, VISTA member can choose cash stipend of $1,200. ~Student loan deferment during year of service. ~Travel and training. ~Health plan. ~Child care (if family-eligible) of up to $300/month. ~Relocation and shipping reimbursements. ~Non-competitive entry for federal jobs after service. ~Gaining practical, real-world experience in non-profit or governmental agencies. ~Building professional skills for resume. ~Making a difference in the community of your choice.
